Making words work.

Normally, I do everything I can to “fight the machine” when it comes to the decline of paper publishing. I buy actual newspapers, real books, and still keep paper journals. But even I have to admit that there is a neverending supply of absolutely phenomenal reading resources on the internet; who would I be to deprive anyone of terrific sites when I come across them?

NewPages.com proclaims “Good Reading Starts Here,” and I can’t help but agree. Check them out, I guarantee you’ll enjoy yourself.

I have recently become a huge fan of several online magazines, or e-zines. As you all know, I can’t stumble across a good thing and not share it, so each week I will feature a new ezine which you must check out. Right now, run run run!

This week’s star is:

Writer’s Weekly.com — The standard classic, with the highest circulation of any freelance ezine in the world, the Writer’s Weekly is chock-full of excellent freelance job market opportunities and weekly news stories about the writing world.  Also, when you subscribe, you can also receive the ebook, How to Be a Freelance Writer (with 103 paying markets!) for free.

Follow the link above, or copy/paste http://www.writersweekly.com into your browser, and enjoy!

I have recently enrolled in a new writing class, “Internet Writing Markets,” that is proving to be incredibly interesting. We’re only three lessons in, but so far we’ve covered freelance sites, e-zines, and web newsletters.

As the course progresses, I’ll be sure to post resources from my notes here. Naturally, I can’t post lessons or direct quotes, because I don’t want to violate my instructor’s copyright or intellectual property rights, but I will most definitely share what I can!

I must say, it is an extremely odd feeling to have homework once again. Strange, indeed…

A friend of mine recently (like, yesterday) turned me on to the book-lover’s dream site: GoodReads.com

I’m hooked, I tell you. For anyone who has no desire to become an Oprah-lemming, waiting for her to tell you what next to read, GoodReads is absolutely stellar.

Go, check it out, and friend me! I’m Hope there…because I’m creative like that. Heh.

Every day, my spam folder has at least ten to twenty emails offering me the rather remarkable chance to make hundreds of dollars every day by spending a couple of hours whipping a few hundred words out for some “write from home!” website. Every day, I delete each one of these emails without opening them. I can’t help but wonder, though, how many people do actually fall for the salespitch.

There are a lot of legitimate ways to make money by writing online. Paid blogs, website creation, and freelance auction boards are just a few options. You won’t make hundreds of dollars a day, but you can make a decent amount of money, IF you are willing to work hard and put forth the effort. The tricks are finding reputable sites and putting in the effort to build up a good, solid portfolio and reputation. This likely means working for very little (or free!) in the beginning, but the payoff in the end is invaluable.

Don’t be afraid to chime in if you know of a great resource, yourself! Equally important, don’t hesitate to speak up if there are shady scams you’ve heard of or dealt with, as well. We have to look out for each other! You can either put it in the comments section, or if you’d prefer to remain anonymous, send it via email to hope@hopedarbywritings.com

Ooh, I feel all Nancy Drew now.
